Description

Pokemon Billowing Emerald is a decomp difficulty hack of Pokémon Emerald that I’ve been working on and off for about four years now. The game is designed with nuzlocking in mind with a linearized experience littered with intentional risk-reward choices.

It has a unique mix of vanilla Gen 3 and modern mechanics alongside significant changes to Pokémon stats, typings, and learnsets. I wanted to make a game that scratched a specific itch I had when it came to difficulty hacks, and I hope I did. Read the features section to get a more detailed run down of the changes made in this game.

Features

  • Greatly enhanced difficulty, akin to hacks like Vintage White, Ancestral X, or Sterling Silver. The game is made with nuzlocking in mind and should feel hard but always do-able.
  • All double-battle bosses: that’s right, every gym leader, evil team admin, Elite 4 member, rival battle, etc. will be a double battle. There are still single battle mini/route-bosses to keep the game fresh, but big battles will all be doubles.
  • Gen 3 mechanics! There is no physical/special split, fairy type, etc. There are some gen 4+ moves, items, and abilities, however.
  • Access to almost all 386 Pokemon.
    • Your starters are Chikorita, Torchic, and Squirtle, and you’ll get a second starter from the remaining six in Oldale Town.
    • As well, you get access to a much wider pool of Pokemon the whole game through; playthroughs will come with tons of variety
    • Raichu, Sandshrew, Sandslash, Meowth, Persian, Slowpoke, Slowbro, Slowking, Voltorb, and Electrode have all been replaced by their respective regional forms
    • Mew, Mewtwo, Lugia, Ho-oh, Celebi, Shedinja, Kyogre, Groudon, Rayquaza, Jirachi, and Deoxys are unavailable at the moment.
  • Rebalanced and remixed Pokemon! Most Pokemon have been given stat/ability/learnset changes, and some even have new types! This gives the game its own personal flavor, and helps crappier ‘mons keep up.
  • Every Pokemon has its own completely hand-crafted level up learnset. The game is balanced with these in mind.
  • Four new recurring characters with which you do battle! You’ll meet them early in the game, but I’d still rather not spoil their roles.
  • Gauntlets! Inspired by Garbage Green, on certain routes and areas you’ll be locked in without a method of egress, forced to progress through a unique challenge. (Found on routes 116 and 109, to name a few in early game)
  • Quality of life! Infinite sources of crucial items, reusable TMs, running indoors, even overworld PCs on long routes. Playing the game should be a fluid experience.
  • Thorough documentation! Speaking from personal experience as a nuzlocker who’s scoured tirelessly for good hacks to play, the number one issue I encounter is that a hack that otherwise seems cool is poorly documented. Every encounter, trainer, learnset, item, etc. is shown in the docs.
