Pokemon Crystal-Plus is a GBC ROM Hack by awolowiecki720 based on Pokemon Crsytal in English. Pokemon Crystal-Plus is a vanilla-faithful ROM hack of Pokémon Crystal built using pokecrystal disassembly.

I had a single guiding principle: make the game I would have wanted to play as a kid back in 2000. Not a kaizo challenge, not a difficulty mod, not a randomizer — just a richer, more complete version of Crystal that feels like it always could have shipped this way.

You can download the Pokemon Crystal-Plus rom from this page and to play the game you need to download the Visualboy Advance Emulator here.

You need to download and install Visual Boy Advance and then load the rom.

Description

Pokemon Crystal-Plus is a vanilla-faithful ROM hack of Pokémon Crystal built using pokecrystal disassembly. I had a single guiding principle: make the game I would have wanted to play as a kid back in 2000. Not a kaizo challenge, not a difficulty mod, not a randomizer — just a richer, more complete version of Crystal that feels like it always could have shipped this way.

Core Philosophy

  • Compatibility: The hack must maintain save file compatibility with an unmodified Crystal ROM.
  • Faithful: It must feel authentic to the original Generation 2 experience. I wanted every addition to feel in-universe and consistent with existing canon. To a more casual player, they shouldn’t even realize they are playing a modded version of the game.
  • Connectivity: It must continue to work with Pokémon Stadium 2 on the N64 via the Transfer Pak and be Link-cable compatible with vanilla versions of GSC (emulation works too).

Features

Expanded Gym Leader Rematch System

  • Fleshed-Out Weekly Schedule: Inspired by HeartGold/SoulSilver, Gym Leaders now have a daily rotation. Players can discover which 2–3 leaders are available for a rematch each day by talking to the karate apprentice at the Fighting Dojo.
  • Balanced Level Curve: Rematch teams are designed to be slightly stronger than the Elite 4, mirroring the Kanto post-game power level while preserving the classic “flat” level curve of Generation 2.
  • Stadium-Inspired Strategy: Rematch teams and strategies draw heavy inspiration from Pokémon Stadium 1 & 2, utilizing teams that feel flavorful and true to their character design.

Restored GS Ball & Celebi Encounter

  • Celebi Event: Similar to the Virtual Console release of Pokémon Crystal on the 3DS, I restored the GS Ball event to be awarded to the player upon entering the Hall of Fame.

  • Simply take the GS Ball to Kurt in Azalea Town to initiate the legendary Celebi encounter event! What was once a Japan-only exclusive event can now be enjoyed once more, fully playable on original Game Boy hardware.

Enhanced PokeGear & Trainer Rematch Content

  • Lore-Accurate Rare Spawns: When NPC trainers call to report a rare Pokémon sighting, they will now actually have that Pokémon on their team when you face them in a rematch.

  • Hiker Anthony adds Dunsparce to his rematch team.

  • Bug Catcher Arnie adds Yanma to his rematch team.

  • Thief Items from more rematches: Additional select trainers scattered throughout the world have been given rare held items on their Pokémon.

  • Meaningful NPC Growth: A few specific trainers now have fully evolved Pokémon in their final rematch tiers, making it feel like the NPCs are growing alongside the player.

Single-Player Bug Fixes & Refinement

  • Kurt’s Apricorn Balls Fixed: Fixed the notorious bugs here so that Kurt’s custom Poké Balls (e.g., Heavy Ball, Love Ball) now function exactly as their in-game text describes, to make the daily Apricorn-harvesting loop more worthwhile.
  • AI Full Restore Glitch Fixed: Fixes the bug where an enemy AI’s use of a Full Heal or Full Restore failed to properly clear status afflictions like Nightmare or Confusion.
  • Faithful AI trainer tweaks: Changed minor single-player battle engine bugs and programming oversights to improve the intended developer strategies for Smart AI. This was particularly relevant with the new gym leader rematch teams. I took a very conservative approach to this, to preserve faithful difficulty and original feel of the gameplay.

Preserved Vanilla Compatibility

  • Hardware & Transfer Pak Support: Fully compatible with original Game Boy Color hardware, flashcarts, and the Analogue Pocket.
  • N64 Connectivity: Maintained strict Link-cable data structures so the hack remains completely compatible with an unmodified Pokémon Crystal ROM and functions flawlessly with Pokémon Stadium 2 via the N64 Transfer Pak.
