Description

PokeCave Almerald was initially conceived as a joke between friends, but then we took it too far and actually made it lol. This hack is based on the popular web collectibles game “Dragon Cave”, Dragcave.net. This hack is effectively vanilla Emerald, just with entirely new “Pokemon” and a few other qol additions. Anyways, here we have our result: PokeCave Almerald! A Dragon Cave rom hack of Pokemon Emerald.

Features

  • 314 Dragon Cave dragons you can catch, evolve, shiny hunt, and battle with in the classic Hoenn setting.
  • The physical/special split. Don’t worry, that physical-based fire type you just caught is in fact viable.
  • Edited types and matchups to fit with Valkemare’s lore and elements. Also to make ice actually usable lol.
  • Renamed some moves to make more sense in context. Dragons don’t punch, they claw and bite!
  • Backported and added some moves from future generations and our own minds. Just because we can add the physical/special split it doesn’t mean every type actually had all options in gen 3. Now they do.
  • Chicken.
  • Some retyped gyms and moves to match the new typings.
  • Small overworld and dialogue tweaks for consistency. Trainer Joey doesn’t love sandshrews anymore, he loves Pseudowyvern drakes now.
  • National dex is obtained at the start with the base dex.
  • All event items are available postgame from an npc in the Battle Frontier. Talk to the southern port in Lilycove to use them once obtained.
  • Reusable TMs, so you don’t have to figure out which pokemon on your mono-electric team should get thunderbolt.
  • All dragons are obtainable in a single playthrough without the need to cheat or hack. This includes things like the starters you didn’t pick, as rare spawns somewhere in the world.
  • Increased shiny rates to 1/2048, so you don’t have to spend an eternity grinding for a mon you can’t actually trade or use in any other game.

Known Issues

We are aware of these, though they are not getting fixed as they are either a result of Emerald’s hard coded limits rather than actual bugs, or we just didn’t feel the need to change them. They will not hurt your game and are more quirks than anything. If you find an actual bug related to Pokecave please feel free to report it.

  • The Regional dex skips around and does not show all dragons or their evolutions. The National dex is correct.
  • Some dragons with canonical dimorphism may lack it.
  • Many Pokedolls are still Pokemon.
  • If you randomize the game, make sure to cap the dex at 314 or you will encounter actual pokemon.
  • Footprints and Pokemon scale in the dex is unchanged.
  • The braille puzzle is unchanged – you can solve it with a final-stage Blusang and a first-stage Rift.
  • Very rarely the game may crash when a pokemon levels up. Please be sure to save often just in case!
  • Battle Frontier Brains still have actual Pokemon
