Description

This is a purist’s enhancement of Pokémon Red/Blue/Green. The goal is to enhance the original games for excellent replayability without bringing in mechanics, moves, sprites, visuals, type matchups, or Pokémon that were introduced in later games.

The only version differences between PureRed / PureBlue / PureGreen are visual. Play whatever color you like the most.

Features

  • It makes the bulk of the 151 original Pokémon all more obtainable and usable in the early game, with better movesets and more balanced stats.
  • Many moves in the game were rebalanced or modified. When the author says “rebalanced”, it means “the useless things were made more useful!”
  • There are more bug, poison, and ghost type moves available. The focus is on getting a useful set of moves available for every single Pokémon in the game.
  • Front sprites were updated to be just about the best set of sprites from Red/Green/Blue/Spaceworld 1997 overall.
  • All 151 Pokémon are obtainable in all versions of this hack.
  • HMs are deletable anytime you like and new code to prevent softlocks by deleting them was introduced.
  • Some pokemon have additional types, for example, Ninetales is now FIRE/GHOST instead of FIRE. If you don’t like specific type changes, you can change any specific pokemon or all of them back to normal type-wise at an NPC in indigo plateau route 23.
  • Many small quality-of-life tweaks and bugfixes were made.
  • Game bugs that can be used to your own advantage (like the leech seed/toxic bug, the hyper beam no recharge on faint bug, etc.) are unchanged, because they are quirks of the battle engine that you can use as your own tool.
  • Mew is under the truck as expected!
  • Missingno and the item duplication glitch are intact – but won’t corrupt your save anymore!
  • An entirely new mode for the Pokédex called the MOVEDEX was added. It shows data about moves you have seen in detail. You unlock the MOVEDEX in viridian city.
  • There is an arena to rematch gym leaders and other important trainers after becoming CHAMP.
  • There are multiple secret areas to be found after becoming CHAMP. Bills Garden, Team Rocket / Mewtwo lore, and more…
  • Many options to enhance the game visually and mechanically were added. **(You must turn them on via the options in-game!)** Including:
  • Switchable color palettes (Choose between original colors, Super Gameboy Colors, or Pokémon Yellow Colors in-game whenever you like! Works on GBC and Super Gameboy. Yes, this romhack has GBC support!)
  • Optional Spaceworld 1997 Back Sprites
  • Optional enhanced menu sprites/overworld icons
  • Optional enhanced music (Add in cut content music like Giovanni’s theme)
  • Optional stereo panned audio (Similar to the Earphone1 option in Pokémon Yellow)
  • Optional alternate color palette Pokémon based on region (catch differently colored Pokémon depending on where they appear in Kanto)
  • Option to turn off the bicycle song (plays in cycling road still)
  • Option to turn on smoother higher framerate fade animations while on the GBC
  • Tweak the type matchups to be exactly like gen 1, gen 2, or a cross between them if you like directly in-game.
  • Optional in-battle experience bar
  • Option to give trainers some Stat EXP to their Pokémon based on level. Makes the game a little bit harder.
  • Option to have the game track the PP of opponents (the original game they had infinite PP). Makes the game a little bit easier.
  • If you’re playing on GBC and have the palettes set to SGB or GBC mode, move animations will have colors! Surf will be blue, ember will be red, etc.
  • There are a couple entirely new things added into the game to facilitate quality of life fixes. Including:
  • An NPC who can permanently remove CUT trees.
  • An NPC who can revive fossils for you in SAFFRON CITY so you can get fossil Pokémon a bit earlier.
  • An NPC who will give you LAPRAS a bit earlier in the game.
  • An NPC who will teach you how to DIG in between towns just like you can FLY in between towns.

Changelog

V2.6.0

New Features

NEW AREAS / EVENTS

  • An Entirely new CINNABAR VOLCANO area was added based off of beta/prerelease content. Based off of an unused map called MOLTRES. CINNABAR VOLCANO is located in the middle of the sea route between PALLET TOWN and CINNABAR ISLAND. You can catch MOLTRES earlier in the game here. There are also a bunch of other events and lots of new visuals. If you don’t fight MOLTRES here, it still shows up in VICTORY ROAD. Your MAGMAR can be upgraded with new abilities here too. This area can be entirely turned off from a new WORLD OPTIONS menu in Player’s PC.

  • The POWER PLANT was greatly visually enhanced with a beta tileset originally intended for it from Spaceworld 97. A roof area of the POWER PLANT was added, and a secret area where you can power up your MAGNETON was added. Also, a puzzle with electrical doors was added to the area preventing access to ZAPDOS until you explore around the place and press some buttons to turn them off. The layout is essentially the same, you can just access “the final area” blocked by electrical doors earlier. The map becomes sort of a loop instead of one big line.

  • If you caught GHOST MAROWAK, after defeating GIOVANNI in Viridian City you can bring MAROWAK to the basement of Pokemon Tower to lay it to rest. Fight some spooky spirits based on the weirder gen 1 sprites (they all have unique abilities) and see a touching reunion between GHOST MAROWAK and its child CUBONE! (If you didn’t catch it, you can bring a color changed MAROWAK to POKEMON TOWER basement and it’ll still work.)

  • ERIK and SARA are NPCs in the original game in FUCHSIA CITY who are looking for each other. Reunite them and go talk to them in the SAFARI ZONE to start a new little adventure where you can visit their house on Route 19 (Sea route below FUCHSIA CITY) and join them in their marine research! You can power up your DRAGONAIR by helping them out. Their house’s location is based on an unused house in older map code on route 21. It was moved to route 19 since CINNABAR VOLCANO was placed in the same location on ROUTE 21 instead.

  • You can enter one of the previously unenterable buildings near SILPH CO from a secret entrance. Turns out this building is how TEAM ROCKET snuck into SAFFRON CITY and invaded SILPH CO. so quickly. You can power up your WEEZING here!

  • An NPC in SAFFRON CITY will tell you about signature moves. Certain Pokemon get additional power or accuracy with specific moves. EXAMPLE: ACID when used by ARBOK has 100 base power instead of 50.

QUALITY OF LIFE

  • PC Item space increased to 60 up from the original game’s 50.

  • On every option menu you can now press SELECT to have the game explain whatever option you’re pointing at.

  • The MOVEDEX can now be sorted alphabetically. Switch between sorting modes by pressing SELECT in the movedex.

  • The ITEMFINDER can now detect hidden coins in the GAME CORNER.

  • The SS ANNE captain will let you enter the SS ANNE area without a ticket after helping him. Also he will get rid of your ticket so it doesn’t take up space in your storage.

  • You can order food in the kitchen while on the SS ANNE. This heals your pokemon.

  • You can view the contents of a PC box by pressing SELECT while scrolled to WITHDRAW, even if your party is full. Lets you view the status of pokemon in the box, but you can’t withdraw them.

  • The game will now show whether a pokemon has an APEX CHIP applied to it on the status screen of the pokemon.

  • You can use a wider array of glyphs in player/pokemon nicknames. For example, you can now use numbers in pokemon/player nicknames.

  • A .cheats file was added to the repository. If you want to know game shark codes for pureRGB, check that file. It’s pretty barebones currently but you can request additions if you want.

VISUALS

  • Fast currents in Seafoam Islands are now visually shown. They will move a bit slower on SGB / Original Game Boy due to processing speed limitations.

  • Static Pokemon Encounters (MEWTWO/ARTICUNO (in the volcano)/MOLTRES/ZAPDOS/SNORLAX) now have fancy animations before the battle begins.

  • A New color mode, Y2 was added. It’s basically the same colors as Y (Yellow’s original colors) but adjusted to look like they would if you were playing on an original GBC screen. This means they’re less intense visually.

  • In DIGLETT’s CAVE, if you have OG+ Icons mode turned on, DIGLETTs will pop up and down, hiding from you as you approach them.

  • The BIKE SHOP was enhanced with untranslated japanese text (now translated, such as its name MIRACLE CYCLE), some additional tiles that are only used in the link cable multiplayer areas just so you at least see then in normal gameplay, and a bit more text for flavour on these new objects. Some beta tiles were also repurposed to be used as signs inside the shop.

  • A new front sprite was added for FARFETCH’D based on the Red/Green sprite but enhanced quite a bit.

  • 7 New alternate front sprite choices were added on a new options page: RG SPEAROW, RB FARFETCHD, RG GOLDUCK, RG SCYTHER, SW JYNX, RG OMANYTE, YELLOW ARTICUNO

  • The following Spaceworld Back Sprites were tweaked: FARFETCHD, DRAGONAIR, DODRIO, PINSIR, SCYTHER

  • RAGE’s animation was improved.

  • BONEMERANG and BONE CLUB’s animations were improved.

  • FIREWALL’s animation was improved when using the “powered up” version.

  • CONVERSION’s animation was improved

  • SONICBOOM’s animation was improved

  • When using POKE DOLL in battle it has an animation now.

  • In Celadon City, you can enable an unused rainbow palette that was intended for the city by talking to the “City of Rainbow Dreams” sign. You can talk to it again to turn it off. It looks a bit weird if you’re playing on GBC (colors shift around when text is visualized on screen), but on SGB it’s more consistent since this was what the original code was intended for.

TRAINER AI CHANGES

  • Elite Four Lance and Champion Rival have fully customized movesets for their pokemon now.

  • Most trainers wont use boosting moves if that stat is already maxed out.

  • For trainers with type advantage AI code, Moves that have no effect such as thunderbolt on a ground pokemon will be discouraged even more than not very effective moves are.

MOVE CHANGES

  • SIGNATURE MOVES were added to the game. For specific Pokemon, specific moves will get additional power or accuracy. Example: POISON STING on BEEDRILL will have 45 base power instead of 15. An NPC in SAFFRON CITY can tell you which Pokemon and which moves get bonuses.

  • DEFENSE CURL now makes all SUPER EFFECTIVE moves to normal (1x) damage to the user. It can be very useful on Pokemon with 4x weaknesses like GOLEM, RHYDON, or other bulky Pokemon.

  • DOUBLESLAP now does double damage on sleeping Pokemon, but causes them to wake up.

  • SONICBOOM was made a priority move. GHOST type, with 50 power. If you use it on the first turn a pokemon can attack, it will always make the opponent flinch.

  • ACID ARMOR now gives a combined effect of REFLECT and LIGHT SCREEN, essentially cutting all damage in half.

  • EXPLOSION and SELFDESTRUCT still have 140 power and do heavy recoil, but if you use them when you have less than 1/3 health left, they will behave as they originally did. Their power will be 250, they will cut the opponent’s defense in half, but your Pokemon will always faint after using it. Also, if EXPLOSION / SELFDESTRUCT miss in “recoil mode” they will now do 1/4 of your health in recoil.

  • BONEMERANG now has 60 power, 95 accuracy, hits twice. 30% chance of reducing opponent speed. Also, it can hit FLYING types for neutral damage unlike other GROUND type moves.

  • FIREWALL was greatly enhanced. Now it has 90 accuracy, and starts with 20 base power. Always burns the opponent. If you use it on a burned opponent, power increases to 40. If you use it again on the same opponent, power increases to a maximum of 80. If the user is at least level 50, it increases first to 80 base power and up to a maximum of 140 power.

  • CONVERSION has an entirely new set of effects. When you use CONVERSION, the user can convert between two modes, ATTACK mode and DEFENSE mode. DEFENSE mode cuts all damage in half. ATTACK mode will choose a specific attack that is always super effective against the opponent, but will turn off DEFENSE mode.

  • Movesets were tweaked to balance with the above changes.

AUDIO CHANGES

  • The game’s unused fanfare sound effect has been used in a couple of new events such as the VOLCANO area.

  • If you turn on OG+ MUSIC, 6 Pokemon cries (GOLDEEN, DITTO, OMANYTE, VILEPLUME, POLIWHIRL, RHYHORN) will sound slightly different so they aren’t exact copies of other Pokemon’s cries. (CATERPIE, POLIWHIRL, MACHOP, AERODACTYL, WIGGLYTUFF, CHARIZARD)

  • The volume of the music will be lowered while in the nickname menu for Pokemon.

MINOR TWEAKS

  • Route 23 Pokemon were made closer to the original game’s wild Pokemon, and are at a lower level, but now give full EXP instead of wild Pokemon half EXP. So it’s still a good place to train.

  • When using a multi-hit move, it will only display “It’s Super Effective!” or “It’s not very effective…” on the first hit.

  • New text when pressing A on the SS Anne Captain’s bookcase.

  • Wild PORYGON levels in the POKEMON MANSION lowest level were decreased since Porygon was made stronger in 2.0 version and doesn’t need to be higher level there.

  • TRADE evos can evolve by trading again if you really want but they still evolve normally at level 37 as well.

  • A new TRAINER TIPS sign explaining the box viewer function (Press select while scrolled to WITHDRAW in the PC) was added in Route 6.

BUGFIXES

Fixes for Bugs in the original game

  • BUG: One of Prof Oak’s Dex assessments misspelled “getting” as “geting” FIX: Use the correct spelling.

  • BUG: If a pokemon hurts itself in confusion or gets fully paralyzed while invulnerable due to FLY or DIG, they will get stuck in an invulnerable state until they switch or faint somehow. FIX: Stop this from happening in every case EXCEPT for the player in non-link battles because it’s an amusing bug that is actually beneficial in that one scenario.

  • BUG: The girl with a letter in SAFFRON CITY had her text mixed up with the text of reading the letter. FIX: Assign the text correctly.

  • BUG: Semicolon is used in one of the MEW diary entries where a normal colon should have been used. FIX: Use correct punctuation

  • BUG: “Warp animation”‘ing into a map that replaces tile blocks will show the map replace them for a moment. FIX: Replace them before fading in.

  • BUG: After showing you around once the pewter city guy would start looking around in every direction. Now he goes back to looking down.

  • BUG: In some cases hidden coins give you 20 coins instead of 40 due to a code typo. FIX: Make them give you 40 as intended.

  • BUG: One of the hidden coin objects is unobtainable due to being on top of a slot machine. FIX: Make it accessible.

  • BUG: A minimized or substituted opponent’s sprite will be all messed up if you go to the fight menu, exit, then view the status menu of a pokemon in your party, then go back to the battle menu. FIX: Make the correct sprites load

  • BUG: Related to the above one, if you open the fight menu, back out, then view a pokemon’s status while fighting an unidenfitied GHOST, it will load its identified pokemon sprite when you come back to the battle menu. FIX: Make the correct sprites load

  • BUG: The very top row of tiles when doing the PSYCHIC “wavy screen” animation doesn’t wave. FIX: Make it wave.

  • BUG: For pokemon with names of 4 letters or less, when you catch them the “Added to dex” sound effect doesn’t play. FIX: Make it wait a couple frames and then play.

Fixes for Bugs I caused:

  • BUG: Using DIG in dungeons can glitch out the game. FIX: Fix an error in my code.

  • BUG: Facing one STRENGTH boulder then walking towards another will auto-push it. FIX: Fix an error in the original game’s code that didn’t manifest in the original game somehow?

  • BUG: The guy who walks you to PEWTER GYM would overlap with the player in some cases. FIX: Fix this script to work with 60fps.

  • BUG: Rival sometimes looks around in a weird direction after battle. FIX: Reset facing direction.

  • BUG: Fading in GBC FADE mode would look weird in some events. FIX: Adjust to compensate for the slight difference in GBC fade and normal fade.

  • BUG: Player’s sprite won’t use OG back sprite during HALL OF FAME animation regardless of options setting. FIX: Make it use the correct back sprite depending on option choice.

  • BUG: If you trade for alternate palette SNORLAX in CINNABAR, it will be normal color incorrectly. FIX: Fix an error in my code that made it stay normal color.

  • BUG: Pokedex rating text still talks about EXP ALL. FIX: Make it talk about BOOSTER CHIP instead at the correct rating level.

  • BUG: In specific cases GIOVANNI’s turn can get used up despite him not doing anything at all. FIX: Fix an error in my code.

  • BUG: Changing from OG to OG+ menu icons option after a battle won’t work properly. FIX: Correctly reload the original sprite data.

  • BUG: Sprites hidden while ITEMFINDER is being used. FIX: Wait until sprites show up again before doing the rest of the itemfinder script.

  • BUG: You can deposit the SS TICKET to your PC while on the SS ANNE. FIX: Prevent player from depositing it while on the SS Anne.

  • BUG: In specific cases WRAP can still affect ghost pokemon. FIX: Correctly check type immunity.

  • BUG: When NPCs use POTION or SUPER POTION, the amount restored is not updated to be in line with the new restoration numbers. FIX: Restore correct amount of HP.

  • BUG: When the “Shake Enemy HUD” animation plays on GBC, the top row of the player’s back sprite gets set to the wrong color for a moment. FIX: Set the correct color.

v2.5.5

BUGFIXES

  • BUG: Oak’s text is messed up when receiving pokeballs from him. FIX: Put the messed up text on the next line of dialogue to fix it.
  • BUG: Safari zone east’s sign is incorrect in its directions. FIX: Put the correct directions.
  • BUG: Only one of the hidden items on Route 25 was obtainable, not both. FIX: Fix the incorrect assignment due to the Bill’s Garden Changes in version 2.4
  • BUG: Weird glitches on hooking a fished pokemon. FIX: Fix the error in optimized code I made in 2.5.4
  • BUG: Moves with side effects like MEDITATE, SHARPEN where they can raise multiple stats could do things like say “Nothing happened!” twice if both stats are maxed, or not display the move animation if the first stat was maxed but the second one wasn’t. FIX: Make “Nothing happened!” only display once if both are maxed, and make the move animation always play as expected if the move worked.

TWEAKS

  • Scyther starts with the move SHARPEN now. Seems like it makes sense.
