Godzilla – The Series is a 1999 sidescrolling beat ’em up game developed by Crawfish Interactive and published by Crave for the Game Boy and Game Boy Color based on the animated television series of the same name. A sequel, Godzilla: The Series – Monster Wars, was released the following year. After a giant electrical-powered monster named the Crackler begins attacking New York City, Godzilla fights it it while Randy Hernandez looks into a way to stop it.
Godzilla is able to defeat the Crackler once it is weakened by its unwitting creator finally addressing his emotions. Afterward, Niko Tatopoulos calls Major Hicks to tell him to stop attacking Godzilla, who had just saved the city, but Hicks reveals that no one had orders to attack Godzilla. He is chased into the water by a helicopter, and goes ashore on an island.
On the island, Godzilla is attacked by more military vehicles and a population of Giant Mutant Bees, and eventually fights their Queen. After defeating the Mutant Bees, H.E.A.T. notices that military assets are still attacking Godzilla, and they decide to continue facing them to get to their source. Godzilla steps automatically from left to right as waves of enemies approach and attack. Godzilla can expel “Fire Balls” by pressing the A button as his primary attack, and performs a tail whip with the B button.
Pressing left on the control pad allows Godzilla to block attacks, but doing so drains a “Guard” meter, which will replenish itself when his block is lowered. Due to the lack of an internal save battery in the cartridge itself, progression in the game is done by entering passwords unlocked at the end of levels. The passwords can be entered on the home screen to access levels without having to replay the game up to that point.
