Legend of the River King is a fishing RPG that was released in 1999 and developed by TOSE. This unique RPG provides a world of fishing as the prime objective. This game contains numerous fishing locales to explore and conquer. In each area you can collect new fishing rods, lures, and other items used to catch up to 40 different fish. As you snatch up more fish, you can trade your catches for cash at the local fish markets. Your fishing journey will also be complicated by encounters with hungry animals anxious to fight for your fish.
Perhaps taking a cue from Tamagotchi, this sleeper title also contains a virtual pet function. Begin with an empty aquarium that must be filled with the proper amount of water and other essentials. Before long, your baby fish will bloom into a full grown adult–unless, of course, you neglect to care for it. There are two modes of play, The Fish and Raise. The Fish: As a young boy, you must search out the fish called Guardian, the only fish in the river that can cure a disease caught by your sister, Teruyo.
This mode combines RPG elements such as buying items, talking to the town’s folk and searching the local river for the Guardian fish. The fishing element comes into play when you bait or lure fish at the river, in hopes to find a fish. Raise mode allows you to purchase a fish tank and the extras, and raise a small fish. Much like the many Pokémon type games, you can feed it, keep the tank clean and raise the fish.
