Description

Pokemon Emerald But Bad is a difficulty enhancement rom hack that’s main gimmick involves me, the creator, redrawing every Pokémon sprite using the help of HexManiacAdvance and MS Paint. Changing it to be much simpler, whether in relation to their design, the parts of a Pokémon can be based on, or making funny references to things I’ve seen on the internet. The off-the-wall nature of the game gives it an unserious, yet silly vibe. Fun Fact: Before making this game, I made 2 mini versions testing this concept with Fire Red and Ruby 3 years ago, but it wasn’t publicly released.

Difficulty

The design of this game, difficulty-wise, was inspired by rom hacks like Vintage WhiteRigorous Red, and Sterling Silver, and it’s no different when it comes to implementing new type changes, stat buffs, ability changes, and move set overhauling to account for the increase in trainer difficulty while also making certain Pokémon new and fresh. The game aims to be around the same difficulty as the rom hacks mentioned, while trying to keep it fair through the options the player gets during the game. Despite me designing it to be nuzlocked, there’s a lot of fun that can be had playing it casually too!

Features

  • The game uses vanilla Gen 3 mechanics, so there’s no post-Gen 3 physical special split.
  • I removed all in-game trades.
  • I have removed EVs, Vitamins, from the game.
  • There are a few evolutions that have been changed (more information in the Pokémon Changes Doc)
  • Wild Encounter tables have been greatly edited for more variety.
  • Game Corner TMs are a lot cheaper.
  • Pokémarts have been changed a lot to give the players plenty of useful items like rare candies, berries, TMs, and more!
  • There are a few item changes I made to the nature HP berries, Shell Bell (I killed Leppa Berry, so you’ll have to use Max Elixirs).
  • Moves have been changed, whether it would be move effects, move power, or PP as a balancing act for the AI and the player.
  • Overworld trainers have been changed, so you will know what you have to fight in the docs.
  • Trainers will get progressively more difficult the farther you go on; they use Gym Leader AI (Expert AI) in addition to other AI Flags, if mentioned in the docs.
  • Gym leaders and Evil Team fights were revamped to be more difficult.
  • There are a few gauntlets throughout the game that will give the player rewards when beaten.
  • I added a couple of trainer b2bs in the mid to late game.
  • Dusclops Teleporters have been added in certain areas to help the player move around the game much faster once they’re unlocked.
  • I made some new PC Box Wallpapers that are located in the Etcetera Theme.
  • New Heart Scale NPCs (Leftovers and Shell Bell NPCs).
  • Team Aqua gets some more cutscenes and a special event tied to them that shows their presence in the story.
  • New Moves: X-Scissor, Drill Run, Night Daze, Draco Meteor, Shadow Rush, and much more have been added to the game.
  • New boss fights are added in the game; some are pretty funny, so be on the lookout.

Changelog

V1.0.6

  • Made Muk in Route 133 100% with Super Rod. I made a mistake in the doc, which had 100% Absol as the Super Rod encounter, while it was a 30% Old Rod encounter.

V1.0.5

  • Fixed Magma Hideout Tiles blocking the player in the Sun Section, preventing progression without Walk Through Walls
  • Removed Strength and Rock Smash rocks from Magma Hideout and Seafloor Cavern.
  • Added rain tiles in Seafloor Cavern that could’ve caused an exploit that allowed the player to fight the final Seafloor Cavern grunt and Shelly without rain.

V1.0.4

  • Added the HZLA Switch in AI Calc to the Trainer Docs
  • Nerfed Tate and Liza Split
  • Buffed the following Pokémon: Drowzee and Hypno, Tangela, Exeggcute and Exeggutor, Espeon, Girafarig, Marshtomp and Swampert, Kingdra, Pelipper, Milotic
