Pokemon Instinct Emerald is an experimental Pokémon Emerald modification that explores what battles would feel like if Pokémon could learn from experience rather than robotically following commands. Instead of choosing moves purely from hard-coded logic, Pokémon using Instinct adapt their behavior over time based on your feedback.
Features
Core Idea
Each Pokémon has a small learning model that influences how it selects moves in battle.
The model considers:
- Type effectiveness
- Move power and accuracy
- STAB
- Buff or debuff the target
- Buff or debuff self
Based on these inputs, the Pokémon gradually adjusts its decision-making to favor moves that lead to better feedback.
Type Matchup Learning
Each time a Pokémon uses an attack, it has a chance to learn the effectiveness of that move against the defending Pokémon’s type.
- Super-effective and not-very-effective results are remembered
- Learned matchups influence future move choices
- Knowledge is Pokémon-specific, not global
- As new type matchups are learned, there is a chance for older matchup knowledge to fade
This system allows Pokémon to gradually “figure out” what works — much like a real creature learning through battle experience.
This means:
- Pokémon may start out making sub-optimal choices
- Over repeated battles, they improve
Trainer–Pokémon Relationship
The system is designed to feel less like directly controlling a Pokémon and more like partnering with a Pokémon that grows alongside you.
An obedience / discipline value affects how exploratory the Pokémon is:
- Negative feedback lowers obedience
- Positive/No feedback increases obedience
