Description

Pokemon Rogue Rescue Team – National Dex Expansion is a ROM hack dedicated to making Pokemon Mystery Dungeon what it truly was meant to be: a Roguelike. The National Dex expansion attempts to bring Pokémon, moves and mechanics from generation 4 onwards to the Rescue Team engine, on top of what the original hack ROM by FourBolt has to offer. This hack utilizes as many elements as possible in Red Rescue Team to make it a true Roguelike with strategy, decisions, randomization, and a huge amount of replayability.

It is not a “pure” randomization hack, because that takes away from the immersion of the dungeons (for example, visuals will match the main type of a dungeon). The hack aims at reducing cheese (attract, silver wind, pass scarf) and utilizing all items present in the game to their max effect to bring out strategy in players’ runs. Play through 10 sequential themed dungeons with different bosses and enemies, each one getting more difficult than the last. This ROM hack is a dungeon-roguelike focused hack, not a story ROM hack.

Gameplay

Pokemon Rogue Rescue Team – National Dex Expansion plays as a seeded roguelike run: during the personality quiz you pick a numeric seed, then charge into a 10-dungeon gauntlet that only ever reveals the next challenge. Your seed is the recipe for the run: it locks in the order, scales floor counts as you climb, and bakes in a consistent mix of tilesets, spawns, traps, weather, and item pools.

On top of that, you can pick any hero/partner from the full roster, start with Friend Areas unlocked, and choose from Normal/Hard/Nightmare plus recruit presets to shape how brutal (or pure) the run feels. Share a seed to race friends through the exact same adventure, or roll a new one for a fresh, wildly different journey.

Difficulty

  • Item carry limit at dungeon entry shrinks as difficulty rises (full pack → 10 → 5).
  • Dungeon recruit chance drops with difficulty; Friend Bow bonus also shrinks.
  • Floor visibility rolls are harsher on higher difficulty.
  • Monster House chance increases with difficulty.
  • Sticky item chance increases with difficulty.
  • Boss weather triggers are more likely on higher difficulty.
  • Boss HP scales up with difficulty.
  • Boss level offset increases with difficulty.
  • Kecleon shopkeeper is more likely to be missing on higher difficulty.
  • Gengar hint cost surcharge increases with difficulty.
  • Skarmory recruit offer cost surcharge increases with difficulty.

Features

  • Three difficulty modes: Normal, Hard, Nightmare. Difficulty dynamically affects recruitment rates, boss strength, item limits, visibility, trap density, weather usage, shop behavior, and dungeon variance.
  • Two Pokémon pools available: National Dex, which enables Pokémon from gen 4 onwards that are implemented into the ROM hack to spawn and be chosen as starters; and Classic, which limits the experience to the vanilla Rescue Team Pokémon pool (gens 1-3 + Munchlax).
  • All Friend Areas unlocked from the start.
  • Start each run by selecting one item from five randomized options.
  • Play as any Pokémon with any partner from the beginning, including legendaries.
  • Recruitment no longer tied to level; base recruitment chance scales by difficulty.
  • Optional “never recruit” mode for challenge runs.
  • Limit on total recruitable Pokémon at a time, scaled by difficulty.
  • Boss fights feature weather effects where appropriate; higher difficulties increase weather usage.
  • Weather appears naturally in appropriate dungeons (e.g., rain in water-themed dungeons).
  • Bosses have custom movesets and HP scaling to prevent trivial encounters.
  • Healing moves removed from bosses.
  • Bosses drop loot on defeat, improving as harder dungeons are cleared.
  • Dungeon generation significantly expanded: outer rooms enabled, more secondary maze types (maze, plus, checker, pool, island, divider), increased randomness, and removal of tiny floors.
  • “Super Trap” rooms added; NPCs can reveal which floor is heavily trapped for a fee.
  • Kecleon shops may spawn without a shopkeeper, forcing theft-only decisions (more common on Nightmare).
  • Reduced chance of missing Kecleon.
  • Interactable NPCs between dungeons offer paid hints or Pokémon recruitment services.
  • NPC available to delete unwanted moves (e.g., Splash) to enable effective Struggle usage.
  • Randomization seed selection supported for reproducible runs or shared challenges.
  • Item spawn stickiness scales with difficulty.
  • Item carry limits on dungeon entry scale with difficulty.
  • Visibility range influenced by difficulty.
  • All Pokémon balanced to be viable at level 1.
  • All Pokémon start with at least two attacking moves at level 1, including Ditto.
  • Regular Attack automatically uses the stronger of physical or special damage.
  • Multi-hit moves (Bullet Seed, Bone Rush, DoubleSlap, Fury Swipes) rebalanced with reduced power.
  • Silver Wind, Heat Wave, and Powder Snow deal reduced damage and can hit allies.
  • Spore only affects foes directly in front of the user.
  • Agility affects only the user.
  • Attract duration reduced to two turns.
  • Frustration and Return both deal a flat 30 damage.
  • HMs function as standard TMs and can be found in dungeons.
  • Increased Max Elixir spawn rates.
  • EXP gain increased by ~20% to reduce grinding.
  • Pokémon with unusually high EXP curves receive bonus EXP per defeat (e.g., Magikarp line, Ho-Oh, Unown, Milotic line).
  • Floor spawn logic weighted by total base stats; early floors favor weaker Pokémon.
  • Shiny system added, rare but guarenteed recruit.
  • Shiny structure reworked to allow body-part color modifications.
  • Munchlax and Decoy (glitch Pokémon) are playable with custom-designed movesets.
  • Bonsly, Mime Jr., Riolu, Lucario, Weavile, Joltik and Galvantula are playable exclusive to the National Dex mode.
  • Shop buy and sell prices capped at 4000; overpriced items rebalanced. Banana price set to 50.
  • Friend Area entry bug fixed.
  • Autopilot system added, toggleable via R + A.
  • Auto leader swap system added, toggleable via R + B.
