Description

Pokemon Crystal Reflection is a ROM hack of Pokémon Crystal, a game beloved by many. Despite its staunch support, Crystal garners criticism from many as well. I am quite fond of Generation 2 in its entirety, and as someone with an ever-flowing reservoir of ideas, I’ve decided to craft what I believe to be an engaging ROM hack experience that I hope many people can enjoy. Crystal Reflection aims to provide the player with a curated experience in the Johto region centered around two main design goals.

Rebalancing the difficulty and enhancing the narrative. With the amount of quality projects made by quality people, I understand that I am vying for both the community’s time and trust. Since there are so many wonderful hacks out there, I feel it best to lay out what makes both myself and my hack unique in the hopes that many of you reading this will come to enjoy the experience I have crafted as well.

The difficulty of this hack should be both accessible to newcomers and veterans alike, providing a fair challenge whilst giving players the necessary tools to overcome any obstacle. I personally believe that base Crystal leans on the easier side to the point of not being entirely engaging (like most games in the series), so Crystal Reflection aims to rectify that. Your journey playing through the game should be challenging enough that even experienced veterans will have to think about how to overcome major challenges.

While first-time players can still comfortably learn and grow as they play, tackling any roadblocks as they come through, and strategizing. Players will not and should never feel like they are punished for using their favorites. Even though a power disparity between the most and least effective partners intentionally exists, fleshed-out teams of any reasonable composition should be able to conquer Crystal Reflection.

Features

  • Custom, handcrafted battles for every single trainer in the game
  • New story beats and battles to flesh out certain characters and plot points
  • Reworked movepools from the ground up to give every Pokémon a unique identity
  • Rebalancing of moves themselves, including new and improved TM distribution
  • Reimagined wild encounters, incentivizing creative teambuilding
  • Revamped trainer AI, offering more engaging battles across many trainer classes
  • A never before seen (to my knowledge) addressing of the “infamous level curve”
  • Complete text overhaul, including grammar fixes and new lines for many NPCs to reflect changes (I painstakingly went through every single map manually and edited text by hand, most notably, out of place uppercase text should now be lowercase)

Features that are not included

  • Nuzlocke-focused features, such as purchasable rare candies or built-in nuzlocke functionality
  • Buffing of weaker options to compete with top-tier picks
  • Extensive base stat and type changes
  • New moves, types, Pokémon, or battle mechanics that are introduced post-Johto, beyond select QOL features

Planned Updates

  • Gym leader rematches for both Kanto and Johto (including the Elite 4)
  • Additional battles for select trainers (this is mostly an issue of ROM space)
  • Increased story significance of Kanto (new events, etc.)
  • Custom music tracks for certain new additions
  • Custom title screen

Changelog

V1.31

  • Fixed an instance of a bugged gym trainer when going to Mahogany first
  • Various minor text cleanups
  • Moved a new NPC to an easier to find location, and changed their availability
  • Various minor trainer tweaks

V1.3

  • Added Elite 4 rematches with the intent to provide players with an endgame challenge between Blue and Red
  • Added a new battle transition for Team Rocket battles
  • If you have 16 badges: Added a special reward for defeating Blue
  • Added a custom title screen
  • Added some unique Mart dialogue to enrich the setting
  • Added some new NPCs that give out a certain, very useful item. Go find them!
  • Added NPCs that will accept this item for various goods/services. Find ’em all! Balance
  • Increased Twister’s secondary effect chance 20 > 30 should be a nice incentive for early game mons to use this move more often, plus with no double battles this feels in line with similar single target moves
  • Adjusted wild Pokémon levels in Kanto to align with natural player progression
  • Adjusted some trainer teams/movesets in Kanto
  • Adjusted Jasmine’s team in certain iterations
  • Lowered the max amount of non rest sleep turns to 3 (willing to adjust/revert this in the future, I would like to see how players feel battles are impacted by this significant change, since battles would be less cheeseable for both players and opponents. Also, anything other than 3 or 7 turns seems to completely break the code)
  • Lowered the amount of time sleeping Pokémon from headbutt trees stay asleep from 7 to 5 turns
  • Adjusted the TM compatibility of many Pokémon to account for Brock and Blaine properly giving out their rewards Quality of Life
  • Rocket Scientist trainers now have Team Rocket’s battle music
  • Lum Berries can now spawn from item and apricot trees
  • Kurt will make Poké Balls instantly
  • Increased the Pokémon Center healing animation speed
  • Increased the rate at which phone calls will occur. This will help with those looking for items unique to phone trainers Bugfixes
  • Adjusted various Kanto dialogue for quality and textbox overflows
  • Fixed an issue where Brock and Blaine were not giving their respective TMs to the player
  • Fixed an oversight where certain progression paths yielded trainer battles against only Clefairy

V1.21

  • Fixed 2 instances of bugged Pokémon on trainer teams
  • Fixed incorrect text when receiving TM12
  • Incorporated text feedback in various places in the game
  • Fixed some text overflow issues in Kanto
