Description

Pokemon Crystal Reflection is a ROM hack of Pokémon Crystal, a game beloved by many. Despite its staunch support, Crystal garners criticism from many as well. I am quite fond of Generation 2 in its entirety, and as someone with an ever-flowing reservoir of ideas, I’ve decided to craft what I believe to be an engaging ROM hack experience that I hope many people can enjoy. Crystal Reflection aims to provide the player with a curated experience in the Johto region centered around two main design goals.

Rebalancing the difficulty and enhancing the narrative. With the amount of quality projects made by quality people, I understand that I am vying for both the community’s time and trust. Since there are so many wonderful hacks out there, I feel it best to lay out what makes both myself and my hack unique in the hopes that many of you reading this will come to enjoy the experience I have crafted as well.

The difficulty of this hack should be both accessible to newcomers and veterans alike, providing a fair challenge whilst giving players the necessary tools to overcome any obstacle. I personally believe that base Crystal leans on the easier side to the point of not being entirely engaging (like most games in the series), so Crystal Reflection aims to rectify that. Your journey playing through the game should be challenging enough that even experienced veterans will have to think about how to overcome major challenges.

While first-time players can still comfortably learn and grow as they play, tackling any roadblocks as they come through, and strategizing. Players will not and should never feel like they are punished for using their favorites. Even though a power disparity between the most and least effective partners intentionally exists, fleshed-out teams of any reasonable composition should be able to conquer Crystal Reflection.

Features

  • Custom, handcrafted battles for every single trainer in the game
  • New story beats and battles to flesh out certain characters and plot points
  • Reworked movepools from the ground up to give every Pokémon a unique identity
  • Rebalancing of moves themselves, including new and improved TM distribution
  • Reimagined wild encounters, incentivizing creative teambuilding
  • Revamped trainer AI, offering more engaging battles across many trainer classes
  • A never before seen (to my knowledge) addressing of the “infamous level curve”
  • Complete text overhaul, including grammar fixes and new lines for many NPCs to reflect changes (I painstakingly went through every single map manually and edited text by hand, most notably, out of place uppercase text should now be lowercase)

Features that are not included

  • Nuzlocke-focused features, such as purchasable rare candies or built-in nuzlocke functionality
  • Buffing of weaker options to compete with top-tier picks
  • Extensive base stat and type changes
  • New moves, types, Pokémon, or battle mechanics that are introduced post-Johto, beyond select QOL features

Planned Updates

  • Gym leader rematches for both Kanto and Johto (including the Elite 4)
  • Additional battles for select trainers (this is mostly an issue of ROM space)
  • Increased story significance of Kanto (new events, etc.)
  • Custom music tracks for certain new additions
  • Custom title screen

Changelog

V1.2

  • Fixed various text entries to account for consistency, capitalization, and text box overflow
  • Buffed a specific stat of a specific Pokémon by a certain amount. This amount is definitely subject to change, but here is the Pokémon and reasoning > Sneasel Sp. Atk 35 > 50, even on a Sneasel 4x Surf should do half to a similarly leveled Golem I’m actually thinking 50 might be too high, as I want Sneasel’s special movepool to focus on its secondary effects rather than damage, but this should still be a nice bone to throw for everyone’s favorite Johto weasel. Sneasel will continue to primarily be a physical attacker while using its special movepool for support purposes (feint attack, icy wind, beat up, etc.) This has a domino effect of making certain rival fights slightly more challenging, but I don’t expect it to move the needle that much
  • Fixed certain trainer teams that had inconsistencies. These “fixes” include adjusting team sizes, movepools, levels, and stat exp values
  • Fixed an issue where, after beating Misty, Sabrina, and Surge, the rewarded TM would not be given to the player
  • Adjusted the TM learnsets of certain Pokémon mainly to account for the new TMs being properly given
  • Fixed some wild encounter tables to ensure levels are consistent (most notably Routes 26 and 27)
  • Updated the Dex entries to be fully lowercase, with some custom text added for some Pokémon
  • Edited special phone call dialogue to account for edge cases in player progression (Elm, Mom, etc.)
  • Added Metal Coat accessibility pre-Kanto. They are now sometimes found on wild Skarmory.
  • Adjusted the PP of Swords Dance 30 > 15
  • Upon beating the Champion, credits now display in lowercase

V1.1

  • Fixed an instance of a brown-tinted text box
  • Fixed an issue where Bugsy would not leave Slowpoke Well
  • Fixed instances of music not playing/stopping/restarting properly (refusing the request for help at the Lake of Rage will cause audio issues at this moment, but offering to help on the first chance will cause zero issues)
  • Fixed an issue of the rival sprite not properly disappearing in Olivine City
  • Fixed an issue of a certain battle in Sprout Tower not ending properly if defeated
  • Fixed a plethora of text overflows and inconsistencies/stray uppercases
  • Edited/improved certain NPC dialogue
  • Adjusted certain trainer teams
  • Adjusted certain Pokémon level up learnsets
  • Adjusted the PP values of many moves

V1.02

  • Fixed an issue with King’s Rock functionality.
  • Swapped 2 moves in Hoothoot’s and Noctowl’s early learnset.
  • Lowered the rate at which some wild Pokémon flee.
